Community evening to share information and help plan for Wharerangi/Kaikōura Stream catchment
Helping farmers and more than 1,100 lifestyle block owners in the Ahuriri catchment improve the flood resilience of their land is one of the motivations for the establishment of a new catchment group – The Ahuriri Tributaries Catchment Group Trust (ATCGT).
Formed last year in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, the ATCGT is dedicated to creating a thriving catchment and improving the health of the waterways, says Robert Pattullo, ATCGT Chair.
“It all starts with the land. After the cyclone we identified a need to support landowners including farmers and small block holders in the catchment.
“The cyclone has initiated wider community conversations about sustainable practices to recover and build resilience for future events. These conversations have signalled that landowners want to learn and embrace change.
“We want to involve the community in developing plans to improve flood resilience for the catchment, and give them access to experts to help them make a difference on their properties, too.
“We’re inviting people to come to our community evening, hear from the experts, and have input to developing a plan for Wharerangi/Kaikōura Stream catchment.”
